U.S. FBI Agents Arrive in Ecuador to Assist in Investigation of Presidential Candidate's Murder
U.S. FBI agents have arrived in Ecuador to help in the investigation of the killing of presidential candidate Fernando Via Vicencio, who was assassinated less than two weeks before the scheduled elections. Via Vicencio's campaign focused on tackling drug gangs and corruption. The FBI agents have met with Ecuadorian police and prosecutors after President Guillermo Lasso requested their assistance. Via Vicencio's running mate, Andrea Gonzalez, has been chosen by the party to replace him.
Personal Goodbye after Public Murder
After the public murder of Fernando Via Vicencio, his children bid him a personal goodbye. Via Vicencio was gunned down while leaving a campaign event. He had been an advocate against corruption and had expressed his lack of fear. The supporters are now calling out the police for failing to protect him. Six Colombians have been arrested and are currently in jail. The country is now in a state of emergency.
Andrea Gonzalez Takes Over
Andrea Gonzalez, an environmentalist and Via Vicencio's running mate, has agreed to take his place and continue his legacy. She was aware of the risks involved in speaking out against corruption and organized crime. Just days before his murder, Via Vicencio had mentioned the Troneros gang and received warnings that they would harm him. One of the gang's leaders, Jose Adolfo Macias (also known as Fito), has been transferred to another prison in an operation involving thousands of police and soldiers.
Threats and Organized Crime
Threats have emerged, alleging that Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso has connections with criminal gangs. The battle for power between cartels and politicians has led to an increase in violence in Ecuador. Mexican and Colombian cartels are vying for territory in the country. As the campaign enters its final week, there is a great deal of fear surrounding the outcome.
